Scarboro
A beautiful traditional 1950s home with a unique layout in the kitchen area. Once we stepped inside we immediately knew we had to approach this differently than a typical renovation.
We came up with the following design decisions:
- We opened up the space by relocating the original powder room and added a load bearing beam capped in solid Canadian Maple. To achieve an antique look without breaking the bank, we used a chain to beat the beam and then stained it.
- We incorporated two bespoke built-in cabinets with lights, glass shelving and glass doors in the brick walls to fully maximize the potential space.
- We added two-curved arches where one served as a walkway to the dining room and created a new trendy bar lounge space where the original powder room was located.
- With the lack of wall space in this kitchen we must maximize every inch possible. On the range side of the wall, we removed the existing pantry closet, and built a bespoke 40” solid oak pantry with internal storage drawers and adjustable shelves all measured to clients storage specs and needs. We were able to add an additional 18” soft close pantry pull out, along side a 18”sub zero built in wine fridge and a 42”sub zero fridge/freezer!
- We created warmth that is a theme throughout the home by including a solid teak butcher block countertop in the Island, warm white ceaser stone countertops, warm white painted brick and deep red rustic beams.
Island
Directly opposite the pantry you’ll find a unique one-of-a-kind bespoke island where the client had a vintage piece of French glass window they wanted to incorporate in the kitchen. We made a frame in front of the island with backlit LED lighting and hand turned table legs cut in half to cap on either side. We added a small teak countertop piece for the bar sink area, and used dove tail drawer boxes.
We made this island pet friendly – by creating a food & water bowl pullout at the bottom of the drawers, with additional storage in the seating area of the island.

Client enjoys baking on a regular basis, as such we added a mixer stand from the cabinet next to the range with a custom built in drawer for baking accessories to save countertop space. Special hinges had to be installed in order to allow for the opening in a unique angle. We also made a custom toe kick drawer from below the cabinet for baking trays to maximize the space even more.
